Arid Zone research centre

The Arid Zone Research Centre (AZRC) was established at Quetta with a network of Institutes in the other three provinces i.e., Bahawalpur (Punjab), Umerkot (Sindh) and Dera Ismail Khan (NWFP) by Pakistan Agricultural Research Council for the best natural resource management of arid and semi-arid areas of the country. The Centre has been striving to investigate and develop scientific technologies for the integrated development of arid and semi arid areas for sustained economic amelioration of rural/pastoral communities of such hitherto neglected regions, thereby improving the quality of life of the common man.

Efforts rendered by the AZRC scientists over the last 20 years for developing multi-disciplinary research technologies for improving crops, livestock and rangelands productivity in the arid & semi-arid areas are commendable. This publication "Research Highlights & Achievements (1984-2004)" of AZRC provides valuable information that will help scientists, planners, researchers, research & developmental organizations, and non-governmental agencies to evolve effective agricultural development strategy for the arid/semi-arid areas of the country.

This comprehensive report describes briefly the goals, purpose, objectives, activities and achievements of the Center. It is hoped that the technologies developed so far and those in pipeline will help improve the knowledge in dryland agriculture of arid and semi-arid areas of the country and provide some tangible solutions to the major issues of natural resource degradation in these areas.
